A few months ago I talked about the risks of renting a car in Italy. Today I want to talk about the convenience of renting a car in Miami.
To begin with, I would like to clarify that Miami is not a destination that interests me much. However, thousands of Argentines choose this sunny Florida city for vacations and shopping. I do not blame them: hotel prices are cheaper than, for example, those in New York and they can also renew the wardrobe for a year (if they get good deals). Although, of course, there is a big cultural difference between the two cities.
But, unlike the Big Apple, in sunny Miami public transport is usually scarce and complicated to use (not because it is difficult but because you have to make several combinations to go from one lguar to another). So, when asked if it is convenient to rent a car in Miami, the answer will depend on the preferences and needs of each one.
I still don’t have a driving license – I’m in it – but my boyfriend does, so on our trip to Fort Myers we flew to Miami and at the same airport we picked up a Dollar car, which was cheaper than others.
Although there are bus or train services in the State of Florida, the use of the car is almost common among tourists and locals. It is understandable if we take into account the distances: everything is far away, although with a vehicle the distances seem to be smaller.
On the other hand, we have the issue of price: is it convenient to rent a car in Miami when you arrive at the airport or is it better to book in advance? Well, it is likely that when you get off the plane and run – along with dozens of tourists – to the car withdrawal terminal, you will realize that it is essential to book the vehicle in advance. Why? Because most people book cars. Many do not stay in Miami, as was our case, so they choose to drive to the place where they are going.
Beyond the ease of going from the airport to the chosen destination, the car serves to move during the time you are in the place. We did not stay near the beaches of Fort Myers and were about 30 miles or more. It may seem far, but in the car it was less than half an hour.
And not to mention when traveling with guys (which is not our case at the moment). It is much more comfortable to rent a car in Miami if you travel as a family, usually bound for Orlando and the Disney parks.
So, when asked the question, the answer is usually mostly positive. Tip: look for prices, make the reservation in advance and do not forget the license, which has to be at least one year old.
